Readers may be used to the terms BAME, BME, BIPoC, BBIPoC, or People of Colour and ethnic minorities. We have decided to move away from this terminology to shift the focus on the social construct of race. The fact is that non-white people are actually the Global Majority yet due to political power imbalances and historical and modern-day colonialism, we are ‘othered’.

Using the word ‘racialised’ highlights what is done to us, as an active verb rather than accepting an adjective that reduces our worth and clumps together our multiple ethnic identities as one homogenous group.

We hope one day we won’t have to use this term and our needs are integrated into services, policy, politics and daily life here in Scotland.
